K-5 Demo Script
Updated
by Zoe McCullough
Before you begin your demo, always make sure the screen you will be sharing with the prospect has these 2 tabs pulled up: The Progress Learning Website and the list of subjects we offer for their state.
On the opposite screen the prospect will NOT see, you will have these 2 tabs open for your view: The pricing breakdown sheet and the opportunity in Salesforce so you can take notes as you go.
Use the first 5-6 minutes of your demo to build rapport and ask questions about the campus.
Introduction
Before we get started, I want to walk you through the list of subjects we offer for your campus. I will be sending you this list after our meeting is over, along with the overview of our program features, this way you don’t have to worry about taking too many notes.
*Walk them through the subjects*
I will first be walking you through the student view, where we will discuss what your students will experience. Then we will discuss how teachers and admins can build their own printable or digital assessments and walk through progress monitoring reports. I want to leave some time for us to chat at the end so we can determine if the platform is a good fit for your campus needs. Does this sound like a plan?
Great! So a little about us, Progress Learning is a K-12 online supplementary program that is fully aligned to (Insert state standards). There are essentially two parts of our platform. Progress Learning is the Tier 1 side of our program where we give students practice on all subjects we discussed earlier. Liftoff, our adaptive intervention program for 2-8, is the second avenue within Progress Learning, which focuses on Tier 2 and 3 students recovering skill gaps on and below grade level for Math and ELA. We will be going over both sides of the program today.
We do have 4 integrations with Clever, Classlink, Canvas, and Google Classroom. Which of these would the campus use for rostering if you were to implement?
- That sounds great, our onboarding specialist would be taking care of the integrations for you, along with helping you all set up training, which is free through our live webinars with a training specialist.
We also have integrations with NWEA MAP which talks to our Liftoff program. Is this something your campus utilizes for RIT score testing?
- IF YES - That’s perfect, I think you’ll really enjoy this portion of our program then, we will go over how this integration works when we discuss the student side.
- IF NO - No worries, that sounds good, Liftoff is great all on its own!
Let’s go ahead and log in and take a look at the program.
2-5 Student View
First, we will take a look at the student side.
*LOG IN AS A ELEMENTARY STUDENT*
STUDENT DASHBOARD
This is the (2-5) side of our program, At the top you have your student dashboard. This is how we keep the students engaged and how they will be able to track their progress. *CLICK ON GALAXY STARS* The galaxy stars are the currency within the platform and ultimately what unlocks all of the fun and engaging features throughout the school year. Depending on their score on tests or activities, they can earn up to three stars. With these, they can unlock different alien ranking card levels, features for an alien avatar, rockets, blasters, and many different arcade games.
STUDY PLAN
Let’s dive into the study plan and click into math. The study plan is the student's formative area of assessments for all of the subjects we discussed earlier, and it is also where they earn the majority of those galaxy stars. These galaxy stars will serve more purpose than simply earning rewards. This is also how we identify their on-grade-level skill gaps.
- 1 star for critical need for study
- 2 stars for some study required
- And 3 stars for mastery
Students will have a video lesson with a set of three comprehension questions and also a 10-question set. These 10 question sets are round-robin, meaning they can never take them too many times and rarely see the same questions back to back. Let's hop into one one of these sets.
*CLICK ON A NEW PRACTICE QUESTION SET*
When I start a new session, I am given a chance to choose one of the games I’ve unlocked with my stars. I will then choose a rocket and a blaster, and from there I can choose english or spanish. *BEGIN ACTIVITY* A few features in here to keep in mind, we do have text-to-speech for all students, which can be turned on or off by the teacher, we have response masking for process of elimination, and drawing/highlighting tools with notepads as well. Let's go ahead and answer the first question. *ANSWER WRONG* When I get the question wrong, I am provided with an immediate remediation video that will walk me through how to solve the problem without giving away the correct answer. *GET NEXT QUESTION CORRECT* Now you see when I slow down and take my time to get the right answer, this is when I get to play my 15 to 20 second game I chose at the beginning.
*BACK TO STUDY PLAN AND CLICK ON FOCUS AREAS*
FOCUS AREAS
Also located in the study plan is what is known as Focus Areas. This is going to essentially pull all of their Red and Yellow skill gaps into one place where they can focus solely on what on-grade-level areas need the most practice.
ASSIGNMENTS
Now let’s take a look at the Assignment tab. Here, students will be able to complete any activities or tests given by the teacher, admins, or even district.
SKILLS PRACTICE
Moving to Skills Practice, this is fact and fluency work, or online flashcards if you will, for Math and ELA. If I CLICK START for one of these sessions, it shows that I get to face another student from another school. This is a lot of fun, but sometimes its too much fun! So you can deactivate skills practice from the teacher/admin side. *CHOOSE A ROCKET AND BEGIN A SESSION*. When I click begin, this is going to give me a set of 15 questions on a timer, so the goal is to beat my opponent with correct answers and swift memory.
GRADED WORK
The last feature we will discuss is the Graded work tab. This feature was designed to give students an overview and suggested practice on areas they did not master from any assignments or tests. *FIND A TEST YOU’VE COMPLETED TO SHOW RESULTS* If I look at a test I’ve completed from my teacher, you will see it’s going to give the student a breakdown and overall score for each standard from the test. It is also going to give me suggested next steps to make up my scores for each, either through a 10-question set or a video lesson. We clearly identify their skill gaps by three colors:
- Red - Critical need for study (also the same as 1 galaxy star)
- Yellow - Some study required (also the same as 2 galaxy stars)
- Green - Mastery (also the same as 3 galaxy stars)
We also provided a domain and standard breakdown so the teachers can see their data as well if they want to use the graded work tab as individual one-on-ones with their students. *SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM TO SHOW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS* Down at the bottom, if you allow students to see the questions when the test is over, those will be located here, and K-5 students will have a text and video explanation they can view for any questions they missed to show what they could’ve done differently.
Before we move on to the K-1 side, how do you see this being useful in the classroom so far?
That sounds perfect! Let’s go ahead and move on to the K-1 platform.
K-1 STUDENT VIEW
*LOGIN AS A KINDER STUDENT*
This is our K-1 student view. We believe our K-1 students are engaged in different ways and the older students, and for this reason, we have designed a completely unique user interface for them. We designed this to focus on their engagement level, but also their computer literacy level. Notice it is much brighter with animations, bigger text, and bigger buttons. We provide read-aloud to help anywhere that there is text. This study plan is located on the left side and the rocket you see here on the homepage is where they get assignments. It will bounce around when they have assignments to complete. The questions are also a little different. They have larger font sizes, fewer answer choices, and are automatically ready with read aloud.
Now we will return back to the 2-5 student view to go over Liftoff.
LIFTOFF
*LOGIN BACK IN AS A 2-5 STUDENT, AND IN UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER, CLIK ON LIFTOFF*
Now we will return back to the 2-5 student view to go over Liftoff.
Remember, Liftoff provides ADAPTIVE INTERVENTION. What we do well is find the student’s Level, work with them at their level, and quickly bring them up to grade level to address any learning loss. Liftoff is also compatible with NWEA Map if you happen to use it. Notice the Student Dashboard at the top is exactly like Progress Learning. This is on purpose. We want your struggling learners to be able to sit next to your advanced learners and both students are earning all the same wonderful rewards. No one feels left out.
DIAGNOSTICS
The difference between Liftoff and PL is how they interact with the content. In Liftoff, students must take a diagnostic before they begin. If you use NWEA, it completely bypasses our diagnostics and takes them straight into their galaxies. If you don’t, Our diagnostics are adaptive and is what will find the student's level on any specific skill. We have separated the diagnostics into 7 different strands, 4 for math and 3 for reading. You can have the student take all of them or only have them focus on the areas you know they need help. Once I take a diagnostic, it will populate My Galaxies below.
MY GALAXIES
Notice the column headers align with the Diagnostics, and I have a few different galaxies with 4th being the top galaxy. Each galaxy you see below represents a grade level. The student doesn’t need to know this, they are just Galaxies! Within the Galaxies are a VERTICAL ALIGNMENT of skills. I have earned Stars next to all the topics that I have shown proficiency in, and my rocket is placed at the lowest level where I have a skill gap. In this example, it’s (insert standard name). Now to earn a star, I must complete a 10 question assessment and score at least 80%. Then my rocket will move up to the next lowest skill. For the student, they immediately know what to do. Get my rocket to the top! What I really like about Liftoff is that it is VERY SPECIFIC on identifying the exact skill gap instead of just generically placing the student at a grade level as other programs might do. This allows the student to only focus on the skills they need. As a result, they are able to move up MUCH FASTER. Also, remember those Alien Explanations? They are in Liftoff too, so the student is getting that deep instruction instead of just assessment. Liftoff is a customer favorite for many reasons, and It’s honestly mine too!
I want to pause before we move to the teacher side and see what you think so far. Do you think this could benefit your students? (Pause and let them give you an answer)
TEACHER/ADMIN VIEW
Lets go ahead and dive into the teacher side. I am currently logged in as a school admin, but note that teachers will see the same features you see here, only admins can view a wider variety of school reporting as a whole.
ASSESSMENT AND ASSIGNMENT CENTER
*PULL UP ASSESSMENT AND ASSIGNMENT CENTER*
Let’s first take a look at our Assessment and Assignment center.
ASSESSMENT CENTER
This is the bread and butter of the teacher/admin platform. Through the Assessment center, you can build any and all tests/activities that you would like in one place, benchmarks, diagnostics, intervention, enrichment, etc.
*SELECT “CREATE CLASS ASSESSMENT”*
The first step is to give our assignment a name and choose the subject. Go ahead and choose a grade and subject level for me so I can show you some content. (Pause and let them give you an answer and give the test a name and choose subject)
Perfect. So the next step is to choose the content. There are many different options to choose from either as a stand alone or multiple questions from each tab.
*SELECT QUESTION QUICK PICK*
Question Quick Pick is a great option for benchmarks, diagnostics, or pre and post tests. When you select the amount of questions, we will choose the content based on the blueprints of your state test.
*SELECT I WILL SELECT THE QUESTIONS*
If you would like to choose the questions yourself, you have a few different options. You can assign any questions you have authored, you can choose from our passage questions, which is one passage with multiple questions, or you can choose by domain and standard.
*CLICK ON DOMAIN AND STANDARD*
Go ahead and choose a domain for me. (DROP DOWN LIST OF DOMAINS). Now go ahead and choose a few standards (DROP DOWN LIST OF STANDARDS). Perfect. (DROP DOWN QUESTIONS) Now from here, you are also able to filter by question type as well. Something that makes Progress Learning different from other platforms is not only the rigor of our content, but also our tech-enhanced question types, which reflect the same items your students will experience on the state test. (DROP DOWN “SORT BY”) You can also filter by low and high depth of knowledge which will filter the rigor I was speaking of.
(CLICK “EXPAND TO VIEW QUESTIONS”) Let’s take a look at some questions. (Select a few checkboxes of questions to assign)
So, once you have chosen a few questions, we will click SAVE AND PREVIEW and this will take us into our settings. Here, you are able to share the assignment with teachers and admins, allow students to view answers or questions when the test is over, display questions in a random order for test security, and assign one of three desmos calculators; we have a four function, a scientific, and a graphing calculator.
Down below is where you can customize a system generated test. Lets say you allowed the program to choose the questions for you and you don’t want to use one of those questions. Simply click on PREVIEW OR REPLACE, REPLACE QUESTION, and this will give you 5 other options to choose from. From here, we will SELECT QUESION AND SAVE, and now its swapped out for me. Now, we will SAVE AND ASSIGN, and it takes me from the assessment to the assignment center.
The assignment center allows you to assign more of our practice-style questions. So If you go back to CONTENT, you will be able to assign practice questions, video lessons, constructed response, or summative and domain tests. SAVE AND CONTINUE and this is where we will select our class and where we will have the ability to set our text-to-speech settings and english/spanish translation by student.
(GO TO NOTES) From there, we can add our teacher text or video notes, which is perfect for recording your own video lessons or instructions.
SAVE AND CONTINUE and this is where you can set the start/due date, set a limited number of attempts, a minimum score requirement, and if you have Canvas or Google Classroom, you can sync your tests so the students can access the assignment from there. A quick note, all assessments are printable!
Now that we have covered the assessment and assignment center, in what way do you think this would benefit your teachers?
That sounds great, it’s pretty customizable to use it for many different areas. Thats perfect.
REPORTS
So let’s go ahead and dive into the reports. (CLICK INTO REPORTS) Progress Learning is known for our progress monitoring options, and there are MANY. The session activity report can pull time stamps on activities, the assessment comparison report allows you to compare pre and post tests, and we also have a usage report that you can pull by subject. Our adaptive intervention program also has its own set of reporting for you to progress monitor the growth of your students as they work through their skill gaps.
Aside from those, the main reports I want to walk you through is the Progress Report and our item analysis.
*CLICK ON THE PROGRESS REPORT*
This is our Progress Report. I am going to choose a subject and a classroom to pull data for. (RUN REPORT) This is going to give me a breakdown of data by the overall subject, the domain, and each standard individually for both class view and student view. Notice that I have a few red and yellow dots by a few standards. You can CLICK on either of these two color dots and this will pull up an “ assign additional practice” tab. From here you can set the start and due date, the program will group the students for you based on who is struggling with this particular standard, and then once you click assign, the program will send out remediation straight from the report. This is what is known as our popular quick click remediation. It gives teachers back a TON of time, and eliminates having to group students by skill gaps.
“CLICK ON ASSESSMENT AND ASSIGNMENT CENTER*
“CLICK ON ASSIGNMENT BANK”
“FIND AN ASSIGNMENT WITH AN UNDERLINED NUMBER FOR RESULTS*
This is our item analysis. It is basically the progress report but for one assessment or assignment. (CLICK ON STUDENT DOT RANK) Again, it will give you the class and student dot rank breakdown by domain and standard, and again, you can assign remediation from here just as you would in the progress report. It will also show you the questions each of your students missed or got correct.
Looking at the reporting, how do you think this can serve your teachers and admins?
That sounds great! There are so many different reports to track growth.
INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES
Quickly before we wrap up, I wanted to let you know that we do have bellringers, which are tickets out the door, and separate printable worksheets that carry different questions than what students will see in the program, which come with answer keys for the teacher as does any assessments you print out.
That is Progress Learning in a nutshell! I’ll go ahead and let you take the floor, and let me know what you think. Is this something you think would benefit your campus?
