Disable ChatGPT Data Training for Privacy Compliance

Aarron Anderson Updated by Aarron Anderson

Overview

To protect sensitive company data and ensure it is not used to train AI models, Progress Learning recommends that all team members disable the “Improve the model for everyone” setting within ChatGPT. This applies whether you're using the desktop app, web version, or the mobile app.

Why This Matters

When enabled, the “Improve the model for everyone” setting allows OpenAI to use your chat history to train and improve ChatGPT. While OpenAI applies privacy measures, company data shared in prompts may still be stored or reviewed. Disabling this feature helps maintain confidentiality and control over internal information.

Instructions

💻 Desktop app / On Web (Signed In):

  1. Click your profile icon in the bottom left.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Navigate to Data Controls.
  4. Toggle OFF the setting labeled “Improve the model for everyone.”

📱 On Mobile:

  1. Open the ChatGPT mobile app.
  2. Tap the menu icon (top-left or bottom-right).
  3. Tap your profile.
  4. Select Data Controls.
  5. Turn off “Improve the model for everyone.”

Note: This setting syncs across devices, so updating it on web or mobile applies to your entire account (must be signed in).

Additional Tips

  • You can export your data or delete your account under the same settings menu if needed.
  • Temporary Chats are deleted after 30 days and aren’t used to train ChatGPT, but we still require turning off training altogether.
  • Progress Learning expects you to follow this section of the handbook.
