Point Values and Scoring Logic for Item Types

Amy Brown Updated by Amy Brown

Below is a chart of the point values and scoring logic that should be used for all item types. This is the default set by the system. Please make adjustments as needed based on special cases (see bottom of article for examples of special cases). If default scoring is adjusted, please check to make sure both the English and Spanish versions have the same scoring logic. Always test items after authoring to ensure that logic is working the way it should. If you are not sure, please ask. :)

None

If not all distractors will be used, set a maximum response per cell equal to the correct number of responses to prevent cheating.

If duplicate responses are set, you likely need to change to Partial Match per cell max score, rounding none.

It's important to preview and test scoring logic on this type.

Special Cases and Things to Note:

  • Never choose "round down." For partial match options, choose Rounding: none.
  • Not all TEIs with more than one response box should be set to partial match. Examples include - spelling items or math items where all parts of an equation should be correct.
  • If alternate answers exist, scoring logic should be set on each alternate answer.
  • Scoring logic should match on English and Spanish versions. If auto-translate is not checked, scoring logic will not carry over and needs to be manually updated.
  • For multi-part items, set each part to the logic that aligns with our rules. It's okay if the total value of the item comes to 3 or 4 points when you add up the parts, but each individual part should not exceed 2 points.
